Zinc Media took Ruby on for her Grierson DocLab placement - resulting in a job offer afterwards!

I was fortunate to obtain a work experience placement through the Grierson Doc Lab scheme with Zinc Media for 4 weeks. My time there was amazing, everyone was so friendly and made me feel very welcome!

Thank you Zinc Media for supporting Grierson DocLab! Pictured on the left is Ramla Dirie (Grierson DocLab 2020 trainee), with Ruby Hubbard second from the right.

The work placement was planned as a rotation, so I had the opportunity to work in 4 departments...

  • Development – The first two weeks of my placement were in development with production companies; Brook Lapping and Rex TV. I was able to work alongside the development teams as a researcher undertaking varied research, brainstorming ideas, expanding my knowledge on what commissioners are currently looking for, what works best on different channels along with their target audiences. I enjoyed working across several projects and ideas at once. Thank you to Selina, Fred, Abi (Brook Lapping) and Lana, Chris and Ramla (Rex TV) for making me feel welcome and a part of the team. Ramla was my ‘work buddy’ and a pervious Grierson DocLab trainee. I also want to give thanks to Tom, Jack and Jess (Red Sauce) for their support and knowledge.
  • Production Management – My third week was spent within production management taking on the role of a production assistant. My tasks were varied from finding a location for a contributor interview, sourcing accommodation for a colleague and reporting expenses. Thanks to Iris, Dale and Amy who I worked most closely with.
  • Production – I worked as a runner in weeks 2 and 4 (3 days total) on locations across London. I really enjoyed working alongside the crew and it was such an interesting topic. Can’t wait to see it!
  • Postproduction – I spent my last week with the BumbleBee Postproduction team shadowing each of the postproduction processes including the edit assistants, audio, offline editors (where I got to see one of the most recent cuts of the show I was running on) and the online editor.

I am over the moon to be joining the Bumblebee Postproduction team permanently as an Edit Assistant in November.

This work placement gave me the opportunity to get my foot in the door and show what I can do whilst also learning from the experts. It was a great space for networking, I also made friends along the way and got to experience the London life. Coming away from this experience I feel encouraged, supported, and know that I am on the right track. I want to give a big thanks to the whole of the Grierson team, I have made memories I will never forget.
